U.S. to import eggs from Turkey and South Korea to ease price hikes

Argentina's infobae website reported on March 23 that the U.S. government has decided to import millions of eggs from Turkey and South Korea to alleviate the economic pressure on U.S. families caused by the historic rise in egg prices. U.S. egg prices have experienced an unprecedented rise, increasing 65% by 2024 and are expected to increase 41% by 2025. The main reason for the increase in U.S. egg prices is the H5N1 avian influenza outbreak that began in 2022 and has killed more than 156 million poultry across the country. The U.S. government has tried to negotiate egg imports with Poland, Finland and Denmark. However, due to considerations of domestic demand and compliance with EU regulations, these countries were unable to reach an agreement with the United States. In addition to imports, the U.S. government plans to mitigate the egg crisis by developing an avian influenza vaccine, implementing biosecurity measures, providing economic assistance to farmers, and strengthening the poultry industry's ability to withstand risk.
